Colorado Mountain Mecca

Well, in my 52 years on this earth, I have been blessed to have traveled to almost every state in this glorious union of ours that we call America.  Now, I haven’t gotten to go to Hawaii or Alaska, yet!, but the good Lord willing, maybe one day I will.  Nor have I been to Ohio, New Hampshire, Vermont, Maine, Michigan, or Rhode Island.  But all the others have seen my footprints or tire treads at one time or another.  Our beautiful country has something for everyone.  It is a cornucopia of climate, topography and vista.  Desert, mountain, prairie, plain, grassland, savannah, everglade, swamp, coast…I mean, you name it, we’ve got it.

One of the gifting in topography and geography we have been blessed with is some of the most beautiful mountains in the entire world.  The Rockies, the Alleghenies, the Ozarks, the smoky blue hazed Blue Ridge Smoky mountains, I could go on and on.   But one state that seems to have been blessed with almost an overabundance of mountains is the beautiful state of Colorado.

Not only does the state have beautiful valleys, hills, meadows, lakes, streams and rivers, but it actually has over 14 different mounts that boast elevations of over 14,000 ft, including Mt Lincoln (14,286 ft.) and Mt. Elbert, the highest point in Colorado at 14,433 ft!!!  Can you say altitude sickness!  These mountains stream down through the middle of the state from the north/northwest as a descending part of the chain of the Rocky Mountains.  It is a wonder to me how the settlers ever made it through, but passed thru them they did with a little help from the native Americans and a lot of help from the Creator.  And I imagine they had no trouble finding sources of sustenance or game for the hunting of meat.   Elk, mule deer, whitetail deer, moose, big horn sheep and antelope abound!  I know it had to be a difficult living, and not for the frail or faint of heart.  But for the stout hearted in spirit and physique, it must have seemed like heaven, just like John Denver’s songs speak of.  He was one many who have sought out and found immense peace and contentment in those vales and mountains.

So alas, not only can we find some of the tallest mountains, bountiful hunting, pristine rivers, vales, and lakes, but we also find a mountainous Mecca that claims residents from every ethnicity, culture and walk of life, seeking out that famous “Colorado Rocky Mountain High”, where John said he had seen it “rain a fire in the sky’’…………..Awesome.
